Dad’s Smoked Salmon Dip

Growing up my brother and I lived with our Dad. Our Dad was a very involved Dad, he took us camping, fishing, LOTS of road trips and showed up at every sports event. Basically everywhere he went, we went. That same type of commitment stretched over into his grand-kids and you could always see him sitting in his chair cheering at all of the games.

When he passed away a couple years ago it really left a huge whole in my life and as we started to move past the pain, I realized there were so many things that reminded me of him. This salmon dip was definitely one of his go to’s whenever we had people over, holiday snacks or if we were invited to a friends house.

What I love about this recipe is that it’s so full of flavor and you can’t beat all of those healthy fats. We have been lucky enough to have a friend who we have been getting canned wild smoked salmon from for years. I hope to some day learn how to make this same salmon myself. They live up in Sitka, AK so definitely good quality fish is easier to come by. This recipe would work just fine with the wild caught stuff they have at Costco too.

To get started first you want to take the cream cheese out of your fridge and let it sit and soften on the counter. Next up take your smoked salmon and break it up into a bowl. Then finely chop your olives and green onions (or chives).

Add in your softened cream cheese and mix all ingredients until combined. Taste before adding salt, sometimes the smoked salmon and the olives can be enough.

Serve with crackers, bread or chopped veggies. You can also change up variations by using different olives or by adding hot sauce and blue cheese for a buffalo taste. I have cut some of the cream cheese for Greek yogurt which cut the calories a bit and I could eat even more! HA HA

With only 4 main ingredients you can whip this healthy appetizer up in no time and look pretty fancy when done. Not sure why but anything seafood just seems like more effort went into it…right!??

I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do. Every time I make it all kinds of memories come flooding back and I know Dad would be happy we are carrying on recipes.

Course: Appetizer, Snack
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 10

  • 6 oz Wild Caught Smoked Salmon
  • 3 tbsp Finely chopped chives or green onion
  • 1/2 can Finely chopped black olives
  • 8 oz Softened Cream Cheese
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

  • Add the smoked salmon to a large bowl and using a fork break into small pieces.
  • Add your finely chopped chives or onion and black olives to salmon.
  • Add softened cream cheese to bowl and mix well. Sometimes I find a fork is easiest when trying to mix cream cheese.
  • Serve immediately or put in the fridge. I tend to lean towards letting it sit in the fridge for a couple hours to let the flavors come out.
  • You can also add buffalo sauce and blue cheese for different flavor. I have used greek yogurt for a more low calorie version. You could change up the olives too.
  • This dip is great with crackers, chips, carrots, celery and even toast. So many great options.
